5 Foods to Avoid with Braces

5 Foods to Avoid with Braces

Dec 16, 2018

If you’ve just started to wear braces, you’re probably still getting adjusted to them and learning what you can and can’t do while you’re wearing them. Of course, you’re also probably still eating soft foods while you make the adjustment and wonder what you can expect as you grow more accustom to wearing them. Fortunately, the list of foods to avoid is not a long one. The list boils down to the following five foods.

First to Avoid: Sticky and Hard Candies

Soft candies can cause the brackets and wires on your braces to become loose, and pieces of hard candy can get lodged in between the brackets and your teeth.

Second to Avoid: Hard Snacks

Crunchy snacks like corn chips, pretzels, and crackers can cause brackets to pop off, and the hard kernels of popcorn can de-bond brackets.

Third to Avoid: Chewing Gum

Most people already know about this one, but it does bear repeating. Most people think gum’s only negative is getting stuck between the wires of braces, when in fact it can also bend wires.

Fourth to Avoid: Jerky and Nuts

Hard, dried meats like jerky can loosen the wires and brackets of your braces. The same is also true for the crunchiness of most nuts.

Fifth to Avoid: Raw, Hard Fruits and Vegetables

Yes, fruits and vegetable are high in nutrition, but they’re also high on the potential damage list for anyone wearing braces. A solution? Try either cutting raw fruits into smaller, bite-size pieces rather than eating them whole, or drink fruit and vegetable juice.
