Why Do You Wear a Mouthguard

Aug 29, 2018

Many patients think mouthguards are only for athletes who play contact sports like football. However, many patients of all ages and backgrounds can benefit from wearing a mouthguard. Why do you need to wear a mouthguard? To keep your teeth protected, always!

Types of Mouthguards

Before you know why you need a mouthguard, it is important to know what types of mouthguards are available on the market today. There are currently four types of mouthguards used to treat a number of cases, they include:

  • Pre-formed stock guards
  • “Boil and bite” guards
  • Custom fit mouthguards from the dentist
  • Custom fit mouthguards that don’t require impressions from the dentist

Boil and Bite

These types of mouthguards can also be conveniently purchased, fitted easily, and are relatively inexpensive. However, they have often times proven to be bulky and uncomfortable that inhibit speech and breathing.

Stock mouthguards can be conveniently purchased from any sporting goods store, and they’re extremely inexpensive and easy to fit. However they are only available in limited sizes, they inhibit speech and breathing, they require the job to be close to hold it in place, and they are known to have a lack of athlete compliance due to discomfort.

Custom In-Office Fit

Custom mouthguards from the dental office are great as they are customized to fit our patients better to provide maximum protection, they allow for talking and facilitate breathing, they’re thin and comfortable, and they also come in custom color options. They are however expensive, and require Impressions from the dentist, and can even take time to manufacture in a lab.

We at Ornella Orthodontics in Cincinnati, OH strive to give our patients the maximum amount of protection based on their lifestyle. If you have questions about mouth guards, or are interested in being fitted for one in our office, give us a call or send us an email as soon as possible.
